How to choose a Treadmill?

When choosing a treadmill there are lots of things to consider to ensure you buy the correct one for your needs.

Firstly consider these factors –

Space and Foldability: If space is limited, look for a treadmill that folds upwards with a hydraulic ram and has transport wheels. There are also some ultra small walking pads that can fold in half but these are usually low power and therefore have limited speed. If you have plenty of space then a fixed treadmill is an option often with greater weight capacity and sturdiness.

Weight: If the treadmill is to be situated upstairs ensure that the equipment can be lifted into position. Most delivery companies will only deliver to kerbside or ground floor areas. Some treadmills can be in excess of 200kg so ensure you check out the weight and size before ordering.

Running Surface: Ensure the running belt is wide enough and long enough. Treadmills vary in size and a larger running bed is preferred for running.
Motor Power (continuous): A powerful motor means smooth and consistent power delivery. Walking pads tend to have less powerful 1HP motors as they are slower and don’t require a heavy duty motor for light work. 1-3HP motors are used in most home treadmills for medium duty work. 4-5HP motors tend to be used in commercial treadmills that have continual use on a daily basis.

Maximum user weight: Choose a treadmill that is compatible with the users weight. Generally higher weight limits mean a stronger frame and running bed.
Incline: If you need a treadmill with incline feature then check the incline percentage and if this feature is manual or automatic. An automatic incline is preferable as adjustment can be made during the workout.

Warranty period: The warranty period will vary between brands and if the treadmill is for home use of commercial use. Most manufacturers will offer a warranty of between 1-10 years. Typically commercial treadmills have the longest warranty and the biggest price tag. Be aware than most manufacturers will have warranty exclusions for example keeping your treadmill in an unsuitable environment like an un-heated garage or outbuilding. Cold and damp conditions can cause corrosion and affect electrical components so ensure that you situate your product in a suitable environment.
